1. Create a new layer.
2. Fill the area where you want the gradient with white or some other color.
3. Double click on the new layer, this will bring up the "Layer Style" box.
4. Select 'Gradient Overlay' and edit the gradient properties.

Since the gradient is actually an effect applied to the layer it can be edited/hidden at a later time.
