I used the rounded rectangle tool to create a path. I want to delete top part of the rectangle so my path forms a U shape. When I use the pen tool to delete an anchor point the paths stays connect leaving a disfigured shape.

Use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to select an individual point and then click the delete key. When an individual point is selected it will be solid and the rest of the points are will be hollow.

Also when you have a selection,(moving dotted line ------) you can hit (M) Marquee tool, or (L) lasso tool, etc. and PressHold ALT,
Hold Leftclick (create your selection normally) but by holding ALT it subtracts your original selection. |
